DAR meeting features Dr. Samuel Hyde as speaker

January 23, 2010

A very stimulating and enlightening talk by SLU Professor Samuel C. Hyde, Jr., was enjoyed by a large and very receptive group of DAR members and guests at a January 23, 2010 luncheon hosted by Halimah Chapter, NSDAR, at Mike's Catfish Inn in Amite. Dr. Hyde sparked considerable interest in the upcoming monthly events beginning in March, 2010, of the Bicentennial Celebration commemorating the 1810 West Florida Republic in what is now known as the Florida Parishes of southeastern Louisiana. Interesting facts about West Florida's Lone Star Flag and other related items captivated Dr. Hyde's audience.
Among guests noted in this audience were former SLU President Larry Crain and Mrs. Crain; mother of the speaker, Allie Johnson Hyde; Research Specialist at the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge, Dr. James Morris; and former guest speakers Dr. Louis and Roy Mitchell.
Dr. James Morris is originally from Kentwood and is the son of Mrs. J. P. Morris J. (Irene Morris) who is a member of Halimah Chapter.
Halimah Chapter Regent Mina Jean Carruth Travis conducted the meeting, assisted in religious and patriotic exercises by Chaplain Minnie Lou Hutchinson and other chapter officers. The next regular meting of this DAR chapter will be at Mike's on Saturday, February 27, 2010, at 11:00 a.m.
