Most of us old folks kin remember when ever body in Amite walked to Church. Weren't many cars 'til after WWII. The Amite Church of Christ, First Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church and Baptist Church were all within a block of each other. So - after Services, the congregations would gather up on the corner and exchange news - those were happy times.
Then - in a short time - Brumfield Motor Co. began to sell Ford autos and Hood Motor Co. began to sell Chevrolets. Soon - most ever body had a car. (Forgot to mention the Catholic Church wuz where it still is - across the tracks on the West side of Town.)
Sorry to learn Welton H. Brumfield, Jr., age 76, passed away 01-25-10 at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. He wuz a pilot for Stratic Air Force. He wuz an active member of First United Methodist Church. His wife, Jackie Brumfield, preceded him in death. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Josephine H. Brumfield; a daughter, Becki Biandolillo and a son, Greg Brumfield and numerous grandchildren and great grand children.
The passing away of Welton Brumfield, Jr. closes the door after many years of Brumfields being an active part of Amite history.
