Tangipahoa Parish going GREEN?
Parish looks to start recycling in March
Tangipahoa Parish government anticipates a parish-wide recycling program in March, Councilman Bobby Cortex said during Monday's January 25 parish council meeting.
This comes in response of closing the Hammond facility and possibly closing the Ponchatoula site, Cortez said. "However, Ponchatoula Mayor Bob Zabbia has agreed to keep the Ponchatoula site open until the other parish sites can open," Cortez told council members.
The goal is to have dump sites both at the Roseland work yard and the Pleasant Ridge work yard in Hammond on the second and fourth Sunday of the month from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The plan calls for the recycling of aluminum, paper and plastics. The sites will have roll offs to collect recyclable goods and parish employees will be responsible for getting the items to the recycling facility in Baton Rouge.
Parish President Gordon Burgess requested council members go with him to St. Landry Parish to view their recycling program.
Sandra Madera of the Master Gardner's Club, thanked parish officials for the recycling project. The Master Gardner's push for "green" education and by keeping a place to bring recyclable items will help continue that effort, Madera said. Russell Madera said that ever since he began recycling he and his wife only fill a garbage can once a month instead of once a week. " Residents in this parish can do the same thing and by recycling we'll save years at the landfill," Madera stated.
Tickfaw resident John Schott asked the plan doesn't include glass recycling. Councilman Buddy Ridgel explained that it depends on which company the parish deals with to take the recyclables. "That is definitely something the parish can look at," Cortez told Schott.
