AMITE - The Amite Warriors had a feeling that they could be a good team back in December when they placed third in two highly competitive basketball tournaments. As the second round of district play begins, the Warriors are not only the team to beat, but they are playing with more confidence each time out on the floor as well.
Last Friday night the Warriors flexed their muscles and improved to a perfect 4-0 in district 9-3A play with a big 53-36 win over the Jewel Sumner Cowboys. Amite won for the seventeenth time this season to up their overall record to 17-7 this season.
Amite came out of the gate in the first quarter by going on a 19-10 run, and from that point on, the Warriors were never tested by Sumner. Amite’s Todd Mabry set the tone for the Warriors in the early stages of the first quarter.
Mabry scored nine points in the first quarter and finished the game with 13 to lead the Warriors to their fourth district win in as many tries. Thomas Hart was also solid on both ends of the floor as he chipped in 13 points as well for Amite.
Amite closed the first half with a 9-8 run and led at halftime 28-18. Sumner’s Adrian Robertson tried to keep his team in the game as he scored a team high 12 points while Tai Ron Norman poured in ten with Jordan Griffin adding seven to the Cowboys total.
Amite came out in the second half and put more pressure on Sumner as the Warriors scored 13 points to just seven for Sumner. The Warriors led comfortably going into the final quarter with a 41-25 cushion.
Donald Perry had a good night for the Warriors as well, as he scored seven points for Amite. Sumner fell to 0-4 in district play and 5-10 overall on the season.
