The more things change . . .

When it comes to actions in state government, it doesn’t take history long to repeat itself. Years ago, fiscal reformers pushed through a constitutional amendment to create a Budget Stabilization Fund (BSF), which became popularly referred to as the “Rainy Day Fund.” The actual intent of the legislation was not so much to create a piggy bank for tough economic times as it was to prevent the budgeting of “windfall” revenues for recurring expenditures. The rapid rise and fall of volatile oil and gas revenues had led to feast-or-famine budgeting.

The MAN: Catholic Church

by Milo A. Nickel

My Mother told me a long time ago to never argue politics or religion. She said it was a no win situation and I believed her. For a long time I didn’t argue politics until I witnessed socialistic changes in the democratic party that were not to my liking.
Thus I have argued politics in the past but never religion. I have argued politics because I was, for most of my life, a democrat but my political beliefs transcend party affiliation.

"The Game..." and why we play it

by Alissa Cannon Brown, Assistant Editor

Ask any man, "Why do you play 'the game'?" They will just about always answer with, "What game?" Ask any woman. . . she can tell you when, where, why, and how the game is played. So, what is 'the game'?

Stimulus or Sedative?

Does calling a tail a leg, make it a leg?

by Thomas Sowell
Abraham Lincoln once asked an audience how many legs a dog has, if you called the tail a leg? When the audience said "five," Lincoln corrected them, saying that the answer was four. "The fact that you call a tail a leg does not make it a leg."
That same principle applies today. The fact that politicians call something a "stimulus" does not make it a stimulus. The fact that they call something a "jobs bill" does not mean there will be more jobs.

Some scientific facts about Greenhouse Gases and Global Warming

Juneau.jpg

by Dan Juneau, President La. Assoc. of Business & Industry (LABI)
When things get overwhelming, we often seek to get back to the basics and simplify. This is a particularly good idea in the midst of the current climate change/global warming debate. For most of us, it’s been a very long time since we sat in a science class. Perhaps a refresher course is in order. Our textbook for today is “A Global Warming Primer” from the National Center for Policy Analysis.
