Lady Jackets post 18 wins this season

by Deke Bellavia

AMITE – After being a team that was feared in Class 2A the last several seasons, the Oak Forest Lady Jackets found themselves as the new kids on the block this basketball season.  Oak Forest was playing in their new home in Class 3A in MAIS.
“It was a challenge for us but honestly I thought we did a little better than I had expected before the season began,” said Lady Jackets Head Coach Joe Fekete.  Fekete guided his OFA Lady Jackets to an 18-13 season in 2010.

Coach Coxen takes Oak Forest basketball program to next level

by Deke Bellavia
AMITE – When Coach Bo Coxen took over as head basketball coach at Oak Forest he wanted to take the program to the next level. The level Coxen was referring to was one that allowed his team to compete for district titles and make deep runs in the playoffs.
Even Coxen himself made not have thought that his program would have moved to the next level so quickly. “We have made great strides the last few seasons and we have a chance to be very good again in 2011,” Coxen said.

Lady Wolves' bid to get back to Sweet 16 comes up short

by Deke Bellavia

LORANGER – The stage was set for a huge showdown between a longtime power in Class 3A taking on the new kid on the block in #1 ranked Baker. A jam-packed gym witnessed a great game between the Lady Wolves and Lady Buffaloes with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line for both teams.
The Lady Wolves trip back to the Sweet 16 was cut short by Baker as the Buffaloes used a strong second half to come up with a 54-47 win over Loranger.  The Lady Wolves came out and started the game in good fashion with a 13 point first quarter.

Warriors season comes to an end with loss to North Desoto

by Deke Bellavia

The Amite Warriors ten game win streak and a shot to move on to the Boy’s Top 28 all came to an end last Friday Night as visiting North Desoto pulled off a big upset over the district 9-3A Champions.
The Warriors got off to a slow start in the game and had to play catch-up ball all night long and they just ran out of time as the visitors came up with a 63-61 win over the Warriors.  Amite’s solid season came to an end with a 23-9 overall record.

by Deke Bellavia

LORANGER – Some are counting them out. Some have already said that they can’t win the district again this season. And some are saying that the Wolves' run at the top is over. The Loranger Wolves Baseball team is out to prove those folks wrong.
“We have certainly lost a lot of great baseball players over the course of the last two seasons. But, this group of young guys is hungry and they know that they have the responsibility of keeping our program going in the right direction,” said Loranger Coach Jason Helmstetter.

Oak Forest Baseball set for jump to 3A

by Deke Bellavia

AMITE – After a good run in 2009, the Oak Forest baseball team is excited about the challenge of moving up to Class 3A. The 2010 Jackets also have a new coach this season in Stephen Cooksey.
Cooksey comes to Oak Forest from Brookhaven, where he was a head coach for nine seasons. "I was glad that Coach Brabham gave me an opportunity to be here at Oak Forest. We have a good group of players and we are looking forward to the season," he said.

Perfect Warriors set for 3A playoff run

by Deke Bellavia

AMITE – Amite High basketball Coach Ron Cox will look back on his first season as coach of the Warriors one day and realize how special this season was. With that said, Cox and the Warriors are not ready to begin talking about the season and they still have work to do.
"We are probably a little ahead of schedule of what I expected, but we have a chance to really improve our status in the playoffs," said Cox. The Amite Warriors have not lost a game in two months and they walked through district play undefeated.

Sumner cages Wolves in 3A playoffs

by Deke Bellavia

BATON ROUGE – They say in sports it’s all about match-ups.  Last week when 17th seeded Sumner traveled to Baton Rouge to face 16th seeded Redemptorist, the match-up favored Jewel Sumner big time.
Sumner’s fast pace style was too fast and way too much for the Lady Wolves as Sumner came up with a 62-41 blowout win over Redemptorist.  Sumner set the tone early in the game and their ability to make the Wolves play catch-up the entire game was key in their win.

Lady Wolves capture 9-3A Title

by Deke Bellavia

INDEPENDENCE – For the second straight season, the Loranger Lady Wolves have dominated the competition in district play. Last week, the Lady Wolves captured their second straight district 9-3A Title with a 68-33 win over Independence.
The Lady Wolves needed to win just one of their last two games to secure their second straight title. Loranger wasted no time last week as they claimed the title outright and they came out against Independence looking like a team on a mission.

by Deke Bellavia

The Amite Lady Warriors were looking to play more consistent heading into the Class 3A playoffs while the Warriors Boy’s Team needed to maintain a very small lead over the Bogalusa Lumberjacks.
Mission accomplished! Both the Warriors and Lady Warriors came up with two big wins as Amite earned a clean sweep over Albany High School. The Lady Warriors notched a 61-46 win over Albany while the Warriors got a career night from Todd Mabry to hand Albany a 69-42 loss.
